Geek Stuff
I admit, I am a total geek. Embracing this fact has helped me become a better person I think. The definition of geek The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." It is also defined as a person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated.

| My Geek Persuits
Well I have extend this "geekness" to other interests I have too such as Christianity, Cooking, Home Stuff, Sports and the like. I am nerdy and not ashamed to share it. As a matter of fact its very liberating to embrace this side of yourself. People work so much to be cool can be kind of lame.
Web Ministry
At my home Church, White Oak United Methodist I have developed a web ministry that helps reach out to folks seeking a church and to promote the church as a whole. I also manage an e-mail prayer ministry. I have built a website, established a group on Facebook and setting up a Twitter page. Blogging I am a long time blogger at Multiply a great blogging/media sharing and social networking site. In January makes two years since I have called it my primary blogging home. This is a place where I have connected and met some great people. My Operating System I have been using the Linux operating system Ubuntu. (which is a geeky thing in itself). For several months I have been using this as my primary OS on my Dell Inspiron laptop. So far I have very positive things to say. It is a robust OS that does many things that Microsoft XP and the like does. Most folks need a way to the web and productivity tools (such as Office and Outlook) and a way to edit photos and store music and Ubuntu does that for me. Also there is software where I can play media such as videos and mp3s. I think Ubuntu has extended the life of my computer a couple of years given the computer hardware does not go out. Mobile Communications I think smartphones have revolutionized what is to be geek. Posting to blogs, text messaging, sharing pictures and surfing the web have become very popular among geeks and non geeks without being tied down to a laptop or a desktop computer. Of course it has to make phone calls and they do that very well. I own a BlackBerry Curve from Sprint and use it to help me manage my personal and web connections. Video and DVD We are big fans of the high definition video stuff out there today. We have a HDTV, Blue Ray Player and a high def satellite hookup that gives us a great entertainment environment at home. We won't be keeping up with the Jonses and embracing the 3-D experience just yet. Photography I own two Kodak digital cameras where I have captured the moments in life that I will cherish forever at home, church and more. have helped us reach out to a wider audience. It has been a rewarding experience. |
